President Pete Buttigieg

Only if you have a subscription to The Atlantic
First, some housekeeping.  You may call him Mayor Pete, you may call him Secretary Buttigieg, I will call him Pete, because I can.

Can Pete be elected president?  I say, unequivocally, yes.

Not one of my liberal friends agrees with me. They argue, “if a woman can’t be elected president, why do you imagine a gay man can be elected president?”  They cite the presidential election losses of Secretary Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris, as proof that a woman can’t be elected president in today’s America. My response to that tired argument is: a) Hillary led Trump in the polls from the very start of the campaign all the way until Election Day, b) Hillary won three million more votes than Trump, and c) while Trump held twice daily rallies in the last weeks of the campaign, Hillary hosted fund raisers.  Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!

Antifa

The president of the United States – Donald John Trump – has issued an executive order designating “Antifa” as a terrorist organization.  Which means that anyone believed to BE Antifa has broken the law and can be arrested, tried and convicted for being a domestic terrorist.

But let’s look at this.

Hate Speech

In the year 2005, a Dutch cartoonist by name of Kurt Westergaard drew this brilliant cartoon.  In case it needs explanation, it depicts the prophet Muhammad as a man of war.  The cartoon set off a worldwide controversy for its blaspheming the prophet Muhammad and, by implication, the religion of Islam.  Westergaard died in his sleep at age 86 in 2021.

In the year 2015, two Muslim brothers murdered a dozen people and injured 11 others in response to the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's persistent satirization of Islam and its prophet Muhammad ("We have to carry on until Islam has been rendered as banal as Catholicism").

The Problems with 21st Century American Democracy

There are two, only two, major problems with 21st century American democracy.  The first is the abject ignorance of the average American voter, and the second is the influence of corporate and big donor money, on elections and - even more importantly - on legislation.  The first reason is supreme, however, because if the people were not so ignorant, they would take care of the second problem in a New York minute.  Proof of the public's ignorance is blaming President Biden and Democrats for problems, many of which are only matters of perception, for legislation that is driven by Big Money, and then installing a piece of New York City tra$h, and his craven loyalists, to fix it.   I would write a proof of what I just wrote if I thought that any of my readers needed any proof; they don't.

What Went Wrong?

For starters, we need to agree that Democrats can’t blame the winners for winning.  Trump, his advisers and his MAGA voters got what they wanted.  Democrats can’t fault them for Democratic failures.  Then, the only reason to ask this question is: Democrats don’t want to repeat the mistakes that caused them to lose this time.

The most obvious and agreed upon reasons why Harris lost are: a) she only had a few months to campaign, b) Biden was a very unpopular president (history will judge him very kindly, the American people – polls – not so much), c) Harris was

The Morning After

I left my Watch Party at 9:30pm, it felt too much like 2016 over again.  And I don’t like to cry in public (fact is, I don’t cry, I get angry at my own team’s fecklessness).

John F Kennedy took responsibility for the Bay of Pigs fiasco, lo these many decades.  Since then, what person in the public eye, especially among politicians, has taken responsibility for any screw-up?  You have a week to come up with one name!

End Notes from Stop the Steal

Ben's 2nd book, Stop the Steal, is only available in paperback.  Which makes viewing the sources noted in the End Notes a bit of a problem to find.  So, here, the solution.

1 Mr. Conservative Republican himself, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, warned his party against this unholy alliance with these Christians and their leader, https://angelolopez.wordpress.com/2020/05/21/barry-goldwaters-Vight-against-jerry-falwell-and-themoral-majority/

Power in Politics

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

The 2022 Mid-Term Election

What a guy!  This says it all!
It’s 48 hours before the polls in Honolulu, Hawaii close for the 2022 mid-term election (this was true when I began to write this post, it’s Election Eve as I put it to sleep, the polls are still open all over).  All we know so far is that we don’t know much.  The polls are predicting a Republican House of Representatives and a Senate that could go either way, Republicans favored by a slim margin.

But we do know some things.  One, after the polls close and the networks begin to show real-time results, Republicans nationwide will be in the lead, because day-of votes are counted first, and Republican voters prefer day-of voting.  Two, Republicans will be calling for an early end to vote counting, as many more Democrats vote early than Republicans.  Trump called for this in 2016, he called for it in 2020, and his minions will have learned his lesson: when you are ahead, declare victory and call for the early end of counting votes.  Indeed, Republicans have already filed suits against counting early voting ballots in some battleground states.

On Cancelling Student Debt

In my email Inbox, "Can Bernie send you a "'Cancel ALL student debt' sticker?"

Hell, NO!

Bernie Talks ...

Bernie Sanders wants us to cancel all student debt.  I agree with several of Sanders’ progressive ideas, but this idea is an AWFUL idea!

Money in Politics

How important is money – particularly BIG Money – in politics?  Really!

Well, the truth is: it is very important!  But at the same time, it is also pretty unimportant!

The promise of Big Money to help a candidate for high office win his next election is hard to resist.  The threat of Big Money to hurt a candidate’s chances to win his next election is also hard to resist.   Indeed, even more important than impacting election outcomes is the power that Big Money purchases to influence – or even write – legislation that favors its own interests.  Even if YOUR candidate refuses Big Money, enough other legislators will go along with Big Money’s demands that it won’t matter if YOUR guy is incorruptible.

But how can it be true at the same time that Big Money is not really important?

Insurrection

click to view APNEWS Photo Essay
As only the Left calls January 6th, 2021, in Washington, DC an Insurrection or Sedition, I will refrain from using either of those words, I will not begin my essay with a partisan conclusion.

I want to talk facts – incontrovertible facts, facts that we all agree on – not conclusions.  Only if the facts demand a specific conclusion will I travel that road.

So, here goes.

Unfit

Disclaimer: I was raised in the NYC area around the time that Donald Trump was growing up in Queens and later promoting himself in Manhattan.  No one (NO ONE!) had more press coverage than he did.  Mostly what club he partied at that evening, and who he left the party with.  I am NOT "prejudiced" against Donald Trump, but I am "biased" against him, a HUGE difference.  Why am I biased against him?  Read on for a taste of why.

Whose America Is It, Anyway?

We Americans need to get a grip.

Many white Americans identify with the Pilgrims, with Jamestown settlers, with our Founding Fathers.  But most white Americans are descendants of much more recent immigrants.  Most white Americans' ancestors did NOT arrive on these shores via Plymouth Rock, most white Americans’ ancestors did NOT fight in our Revolutionary War, most white Americans’ ancestors arrived here in the last 150 years.  But even these children of immigrants choose to identify with Puritans rather than later immigrants.  Many white Americans would like to ignore the black experience, even though the first generation of blacks arrived here well before their European ancestors.  Many white Americans would like to ignore the indigenous experience, even though they populated the Americas for 10,000 years before the first Europeans set foot on these shores.
