Aristocracy

“All men are created equal.” These are our founding words, our founding credo. All they really ever meant were: we are all equal souls in the eyes of God, he loves us all equally; and we are all equal under the law (OK, we know this is not true, but it remains our founding ideal nonetheless). But in all other ways, we are surely not equal. Not equal in health and strength and good looks, not equal in wealth, not equal in power and influence, not equal in education and intelligence and wit and cleverness and sense of humor, not equal in character and virtue, not equal in any of the ways that make us all unique (and therefore special and irreplaceable) human beings.

Pity the Poor Billionaires!

Imagine if you will, you are Warren Buffett (formerly world’s richest person) or Jeff Bezos (currently world’s richest person). No matter really, any other billionaire or multi-multi-millionaire will do, one of the top 1% of 1% of 1%. Imagine you are about 50 years old. You own outright your own home, perhaps more than one, and this year’s model high-end automobile, maybe more than one. Your suits cost $3000 apiece and your family eats out at 5-star restaurants regularly. No stretch, considering your Net Worth.

School Prayer

School prayer is a very hot issue among Americans, right up there with abortion and gay rights. But Americans who know the Constitution understand that the ban on school prayer is not an attack on Christianity or on religion or on God. In the first place, the ban concerns only public schools as they are agencies of the state, of the government (our taxes pay for public schools and they are open to everyone, not just members of one religion or one economic class). There is no ban on prayer in private schools as they do not represent government authority. And, finally, there is no ban on student prayer (individually or in a group), the ban is on prayers initiated (compelled) by the public school, as any such prayer would represent an “establishment” of a (particular) religion. Imagine, if you will, a prayer that would satisfy not only every Protestant Christian sect (Southern Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Mormon, Christian Science, etc., etc.), but also the Roman Catholic faith, the Jewish faith (orthodox to Reform), the Muslim faith (Sunni and Shia) and even the “faith” of non-believers. Is such a prayer possible? So, any prayer is necessarily the work of one or more religious sects but never the work of all. Thus, any such public-school prayer would be a case of “establishing” a religion, forbidden to government by the words of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Skokie

Few people, few Americans, really get what being American really means.   Here is one American’s take on really getting what it means to be American.

In 1977-78, a bunch of neo-Nazi thugs claimed the right to peacefully assemble and speak in Skokie, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.  Not only is Skokie predominantly Jewish, but a significant portion of its population is Holocaust survivors.   The Nazis were looking to pee in the faces of their victims.

Pro-Life Thoughtfulness

Pro-Life forces have not thought it out clearly.  They have not considered the predictable consequences of over-turning Roe v. Wade (which is not going to happen as there has been time aplenty for challenging it in the courts and they have failed to do so).

Abortion Rights

There is no such thing as “abortion rights,” there is only Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade does not declare that abortion is legal, Roe v. Wade does not declare that abortion is moral, Roe v. Wade does not declare that abortion is a pregnant woman’s right. Roe v. Wade DOES say that no government – federal, state or local – may interfere or prevent or criminalize a woman’s desire to have an abortion within the first trimester (three months) of her pregnancy; it further affirms that states may interfere or prevent or criminalize a woman’s abortion in the second trimester of her pregnancy, and that the federal government must do the same in her final trimester. Many declare a woman’s right to an abortion to be an absolute right, but it is not so as Roe v. Wade, the law of the land respecting abortion, declares otherwise.

Protests

This blog post is in response to those who have been upset by the recent #TakeAKnee controversy. 

A “protest” is always an action taken by one or more persons that challenges a de jure reality (a bad law, e.g., illegal marijuana) or a de facto reality (where people, not governmental fiat, are the problem, e.g., racism). Protests are always disruptive and often illegal, else what is the point? Many if not most protests are instances of “Civil Disobedience” and in consequence expect police involvement and even jail time. Protests are NOT necessarily non-violent, or non-destructive of private property (the best minds suggest that non-violence is the proper tactic when their side does not have fire power enough to take on the opposition (Gandhi preached non-violence because the ruling Brits had all the weapons)).

The Ultimatum Game

The cheerleaders for “Economic Growth” like to remind us that the best way for working class Americans to take home a bigger pay check is for economic growth to grow the whole pie. And even if their %age share of the pie doesn’t grow, as long as the pie grows they will take home a bigger piece of the pie. Which is probably true. After all, “A rising tide lifts all boats” (attributed to John F Kennedy, fgodsake!). 

But is this fair? Is it fair that when the pie grows, the top earners keep most of the extra pie while workers only get crumbs? “Hey, a bigger pay check is a bigger pay check! What business is it of yours that your portion (%age) of the pie isn’t bigger as long as the size of your portion (raw $’s) is bigger?”

HIPPO

I called the second essay in the Appendix of my book, To My Countrymen, "Gaian Issues" (Gaia is the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth). The essay laments the fact that Americans place Gaian (environmental) issues at the bottom of the heap of political issues that are important to them. And it lists the ten most significant Gaian issues (Global Warming / Climate Change is only one of them). Here is the list:

#TakeAKnee

It all began in the NFL’s 2016 pre-season. At the playing of the National Anthem, Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, decided to kneel, rather than stand facing the flag and put his right hand upon his heart (I wrote about this then, The Kaepernick Kerfuffle). He would later explain: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” No one suggested that he had other motives than what he claimed. However, many (white?) Americans were very upset, and they charged that his action showed disrespect of our flag. But ALL protests, large and small, show disrespect for authority and its symbols, often breaking the law. Else they are not protests. They also claimed that his action was un-American – as though America, more than any country in world history, is not built upon a solid foundation of protest. The American Revolution was its first protest, a huge protest, and its participants were all guilty of treason against their government, Great Britain and the King. And these patriotic Americans wanted to punish Kaepernick.
