Pro-Life forces have not thought it out clearly. They have not considered the predictable consequences of over-turning Roe v. Wade (which is not going to happen as there has been time aplenty for challenging it in the courts and they have failed to do so).
Consider: Roe v. Wade is over-turned and some states criminalize abortion and other states do not. What is a pregnant woman who wants to have an abortion but lives in an anti-abortion state to do? Where in the entire continental United States are there anti-abortion states which are bordered by none but other anti-abortion states? Probably nowhere. In any event, the woman who lives in an anti-abortion state who wants an abortion, crosses state lines, gets an abortion, and returns home – where she may NOT be prosecuted for an act committed under another state’s laws! If authorities choose instead to give her a hard time, they will lose.
Consider: Roe v. Wade is over-turned and abortion is declared everywhere illegal (which will NOT happen as the American people do not want it by huge majorities). What is a pregnant American woman who wants an abortion to do? Why she leaves the country, gets an abortion, and returns home (which is what women did long before Roe v. Wade let her get an abortion wherever she lived in the United States). And, once again, she cannot be prosecuted here for an act committed where it was within the law.
Consider: Roe v. Wade is over-turned and abortion is declared everywhere illegal. Some will obey the law and deliver a child whom she never wanted in the first place. Very few of these children, if any, will be brought up by loving parents, or even a loving man and woman. Some children will be brought up by a mother who changes her mind and decides to love the child she did not want. Some other mothers will raise the unwanted child as an unwanted child, resenting it every day of its life. Finally – not really – some mothers will turn her child over to an adoption agency, in a world where there are not enough responsible couples who would like to adopt a baby. Finally, in all cases, how many women who deliver their child will understand that raising the child may cost her giving up her dreams. One last finally: how willing are you – someone who insists that abortion is murder – how many of you will be whole-heartedly willing to contribute your tax dollars to help raise these children? Into a world with too many humans and a nation with too few jobs left for humans.
I am not suggesting that the foolish girl who “gets pregnant” should not have to face consequences for her immature act, but isn’t having to elect an abortion enough punishment? As for the woman who feels no remorse, no laws will deter her from her intended actions.
If you are someone who believes that “abortion is murder” and that the woman who commits an abortion should be treated like anyone else who commits murder, those who believe this need to re-read your Bible and try to imagine Jesus Christ condemning such a woman to death.
